Installing a mirror medicine cabinet is not necessarily difficult, especially if you have experience working with drywall. With a few hours of work, and a high quality recessed mirror medicine cabinet, you can start and finish the project without encountering too many hitches. By following the basic steps that we have outlined below, you can get started on the project, and help yourself overcome some of the more common problems that are associated with these types of medicine cabinet installs.
Step #1) Examine The Space – Before you begin the installation, you are going to want to figure out where the studs are located at inside of the wall. Ideally, you want to make sure that you are not going to hit the studs with the install, but because of the width of most cabinets, you will end up having to move at least one. You definitely want to avoid having to cut out two studs in the project.
Step #2) Mark & Cut The Opening – Once you have determined where the studs are located at inside of the wall, you can begin marking and cutting the opening. To do this, all you need is a drywall hand saw, and cut away the drywall around the stud inside the wall.
Step #3) Cut The Stud & Install The Blocking – Now you are going to need to cut away the stud inside of the wall, without damaging anything while you are completing the task. To achieve this in the most simple manner, you may want to use a “sawzall” or a circular saw, and maintain incredible accuracy. Take your time during this step to ensure that you are not going to create more work for you later. Now you can install pieces of blocking in between the studs that remain, which will give you an anchor point for the cabinet when you mount it.
Step #4) Mount The Cabinet – With the stud removed from the wall, you can begin to mount the cabinet. If you do not have predefined screw holes to use, you will want to consider predrilling the holes to make your mounting job much easier.
Step #5) Install The Trim – After the cabinet has been mounted, you can cover up the outside of the installation by placing trim pieces that match the cabinet around the outside edges of it. This will help make the cabinet appear seamlessly installed, and feel like it was included when you built the house.
